A doula (/ˈduːlə/), also known as a birth companion and post-birth supporter is a nonmedical person who assists a person before, during, and/or after childbirth as well as their partner, by providing physical assistance and emotional support. The provision of continuous support during labor is associated with lower risk of induction and interventions and less need for pain relief. These benefits are particularly significant when continuous support is provided by someone who is not there as family/friend or as medical staff (i.e. a doula). Additionally, a doula is sometimes hired to work with families beyond the postpartum stages, providing continued physical and emotional support, for as long as needed.
That's me! Or it could be! Or, I should say, I would be honored to serve as your doula. I completed my training through To Labor, and I'm excited to offer services to families of all shapes and sizes, in the Boston and Metro West areas.
I come to this work by way of my own journey into parenthood and a commitment to compassionate care and reproductive justice. My journey holds many stories, and I feel that each of these -- along with what I have learned along the way -- prepares me to be your doula. My philosophy is simple. You are birthing your story. I'm there to support and help in any way. My job will be to make sure you have all of the information you need, and to continue to be by your side (or by your partner's side, perhaps, or where ever you need me to be) as you deliver. I will support your choices throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery, and beyond.
I work on a sliding scale. My fee includes 2 prenatal visits, during which we'll discuss everything from your birth plan (or not), pain management, positions for labor and birth and breathing techniques, to plans for postpartum care and support. I will be available by phone and email throughout your pregnancy and on call for two weeks prior to your due date. Of course, I will be present during labor and birth, and for an appropriate amount of time after delivery. I will also visit once postpartum.
Above all, I will breathe with you and support your choices.
I am happy to provide postpartum support when possible, including overnight care.
I am committed to providing full spectrum doula support, and am a former member of the Boston Abortion Support Collective. If you are experiencing a loss or are terminating a pregnancy, for any reason, and need support, please reach out to them or to me.
I look forward to connecting with you.
