A doula (/ˈduːlə/), also known as a birth companion and post-birth supporter is a nonmedical person who assists a woman before, during, and/or after childbirth as well as her spouse and/or family, by providing physical assistance and emotional support. The provision of continuous support during labour is associated with improved maternal and fetal health and a variety of other benefits, including lower risk of induction and interventions and less need for pain relief. These benefits are particularly significant when continuous support is provided by someone who is not there as family/friend or as medical staff (i.e. a doula). Additionally, a doula is sometimes hired to work with families beyond the postpartum stages, providing continued physical and emotional support, for as long as needed.
That's me! Or it could be! Or, I should say, I would be honored to serve as your doula. I completed my training through To Labor, and am working towards certification. I'm excited to offer services to families of all shapes and sizes, in the Boston area and beyond -- like, as beyond as Metro West and Worcester.
I come to my work as a doula by way of my own journey into motherhood and a commitment to compassionate reproductive care. My journey holds many stories, and I feel that each of these -- along with what I have learned along the way -- prepares me to be your doula. My philosophy is simple. You are birthing your story. I'm there to support and help in any way. My job will be to make sure you have all of the information you need, and to continue to be by your side (or by your partner's side, perhaps, or where ever you need me to be) as you deliver. I will support your choices throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery, and beyond.
I work on a sliding scale. My fee includes 2 -3 prenatal visits, to discuss everything from your birth plan (or not), pain management, birthing techniques and education, to what to pack for the hospital, and plans for postpartum care, breastfeeding (or not) -- and anything else you wish. Of course, I will be present during labor and birth, and for an appropriate amount of time after delivery. I will also visit once postpartum and can provide breastfeeding support or postpartum doula support as well. I would also love to help you craft a written record of your birth story, which can be a deeply meaningful way of reflecting on, and processing, your experience. Above all, I would support you, throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery, and beyond.
I am committed to providing full spectrum doula support. If you are experiencing a loss or are terminating a pregnancy (for any reason) and need support, please reach out.
